Screenings During Well-Woman Visits

Lab Screenings Women Should Have Regularly

When it comes to getting a well-rounded view of women's health, certain lab tests can help doctors to find abnormalities and causes for concern. Although there are health screenings that everyone should get, certain health conditions affect women's reproductive health specifically.

Cervical Cancer Screenings

During your well-woman exam, it’s normal to have a pap smear. During this portion of your exam, cells are collected from inside of your cervix to then be looked at in a lab setting for signs of cell changes that may be a sign of cervical cancer or that can lead to the development of cervical cancer.

This testing can also show signs of inflammation and infection.

HPV & STI Screenings

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections that are transmitted through sexual contact that have not developed into diseases yet. STIs like human papillomavirus (HPV) are especially alarming as they have the potential to develop into chronic health conditions like cervical cancer.

To get an STI test, your OBGYN may collect samples for testing in the following way:

  • Urine sample
  • Cheek swab
  • Blood sample
  • Taking a swab of sores or blisters
  • Swabbing the vagina, urethra cervix, or anus

HIV & STD Screenings

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), on the other hand, are infections that have successfully developed into diseases. When it comes to STDs like human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), detection is key when it comes to effective management as unaddressed HIV can become severe and even life-threatening.

Similarly to STI testing, your OBGYN can collect samples in the following ways to check for the presence of an STD:

  • Urine sample
  • Cheek swab
  • Blood sample
  • Taking a swab of sores or blisters
  • Swabbing the vagina, urethra cervix, or anus
