Lab Screenings Men Should Have Regularly

When it comes to helping doctors get a well-rounded view of men's health, the following tests can help with preventative care and getting a proper diagnosis. Although there are appropriate screenings for everyone, there are certain health conditions that affect men specifically.

Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the United States, responsible for 1 in 4 male deaths. Heart disease is often referred to as the "silent killer," as many men don't have any symptoms until they experience a cardiac event like a heart attack or stroke.

A blood test can be done to measure various substances in your blood, like fat, and can determine if your heart has been damaged and to what extent. This can help your doctor determine whether or not you've had a heart attack and help guide them when determining the appropriate course of treatment.

Many men with high cholesterol do not experience symptoms; however, unaddressed high cholesterol levels can result in heart disease. Having routine cholesterol tests can help keep track of the following:

  • LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels
  • VLDL (very low-density lipoprotein)
  • HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels
  • Total cholesterol
  • Triglycerides

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects men at a lower weight than women. It is believed that this is due to a weight distribution difference; men tend to carry their excess weight in their midsection.

When it comes to testing for prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and type 1 diabetes—a blood sugar test is necessary. Your doctor may order one or more of the following tests:

  • A1C test: Measures your blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months.
  • Fasting blood sugar test: Measures your blood sugar levels overnight after a fast.
  • Glucose tolerance test: Measures your blood sugar levels before and after drinking a glucose liquid.
  • Random blood sugar test: Measures your blood sugar levels at the time of the test.
